ICYMI: AB 705 ESL Pathways: Statewide ESL Dashboard and College ESL Data Reporting
On October 1, representatives from the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office (CCCCO) and The RP Group’s Multiple Measures Assessment Project shared a newly published statewide ESL dashboard, as required by AB 1705.
The dashboard is populated by data submitted by colleges to the CCCCO Management Information Systems (COMIS or MIS). There are opportunities for colleges to improve the way in which they submit ESL data to the CCCCO, which will ultimately be reflected in the dashboard.
In case you missed it, the webinar recording is now available on the CCCCO’s website.
We recently released a new resource to provide colleges with a quick and practical guide for inclusive methods to accurately identify and serve all African American/Black learners, strengthening both data integrity and educational equity.
Filipino Americans are the second-largest Asian American group in the nation and the third-largest ethnic group in California. Since 1992, the Filipino American Historical Society (FAHS) has celebrated Filipino American History Month every October, and the month was first recognized by the US Congress in 2009.
The theme for 2025, From Quotas to Communities: Filipino American Migration and Movement, commemorates the 90th anniversary of the 1935 Philippine Repatriation Act and the 60th Anniversary of the 1965 Immigration and Naturalization Act.
Visit the FAHS website for ideas to honor Filipino American history on your campus and increase your knowledge of laws that sought to limit the presence of Filipino Americans yet shaped their journeys, resilience, solidarity, and community building.
Celebrating LGBTQ+ History Month
LGBTQ+ History Month is a month-long celebration in October honoring lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer history, and the history of the gay rights and related civil rights movements. It was founded in 1994 by Rodney Wilson, the first openly gay public school teacher in Missouri.
October was selected as the month of celebration because of its significance in LGBTQ+ history: The first and second LGBTQ+ Marches on Washington were held in October in 1979 and 1987. The date of the second march (October 11) is now marked by National Coming Out Day. International Pronouns Day (October 15) and Intersex Awareness Day (October 26) are also celebrated this month.
This week (October 13–17) is Undocumented Student Success Week (USSW)! This year’s theme, Together in Purpose, Grounded in Belonging, calls on institutions, educators, and policy leaders to take bold, equity-driven steps in designing systems that affirm students’ identities, empower their educational and career journeys, and uplift entire communities.
Colleges are encouraged to host local workshops, policy forums, and campus events focused on reimagining support structures—centering cultural affirmation, trauma-informed practices, and access to life-changing resources like experiential learning, fellowships, and entrepreneurship pathways.
USSW is a statewide effort led by the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, the Community College League of California, and the Foundation for California Community Colleges, with support from many community partners.
